Honoring a Titan of Justice: The Legacy of Jethlyn Aletha Burrows

On this International Women’s Day 2026, the International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA) Grand Bahama Chapter proudly celebrates the extraordinary life and enduring legacy of Mrs. Jethlyn Aletha Burrows. A distinguished Counsel and Attorney-at-Law with over three decades of service, Mrs. Burrows rose to become the FIDA International President (2014–2017), where she championed gender equality and legal protections for women and girls on a global scale. Her lifelong commitment was recently honored at the 38th Triennial Convention in Cali, Colombia, where she received the prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award. Mrs. Burrows remains a powerful symbol of integrity, leadership, and courage, leaving behind a profound impact on the administration of justice and the empowerment of women worldwide

Celebrating 80 Years of Global Impact: The International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA)

As we mark the 80th anniversary of the International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA), we take pride in celebrating a remarkable journey of advocacy, empowerment, and transformation. Over the past eight decades, FIDA has been at the forefront of championing women’s rights worldwide, breaking barriers, and making significant strides in the legal field.

FIDA’s global impact is a testament to the dedication of countless women lawyers who have not only fought for their rights but have also achieved groundbreaking victories. Through relentless advocacy, they have dismantled barriers and paved the way for a more equitable legal landscape.

One of FIDA’s most notable accomplishments is its consultative status with UN Women, which underscores the organization’s pivotal role in shaping global policy and promoting gender equality. FIDA’s participation in the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) events each year provides a platform to address critical issues, share insights, and influence international agendas on women’s rights.

As we approach this milestone, we are excited to celebrate this special occasion at the FIDACON24 World Convention, scheduled to take place from November 4 to 8, 2024, in the vibrant city of Santiago de Cali. The convention will be held at the Hotel Dann Carlton and will feature a comprehensive academic program alongside a spectacular cultural agenda.

    36th FIDA Convention

    The 36th Convention of the International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA) took place in The Grand Lucayan Resort, Freeport, Grand Bahama – The Bahamas from the November 13th – 17th 2017.

    With the theme “The Economic Empowerment of Women and Children in an Evolving World”, throught presentations and panel discussions on various topics, our members and participants deliberated on:

    II Regional Congress of Women Lawyers

    35th FIDA Convention

    The 35th Convention of the International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA) took place in the Lalit Ashok Hotel, Bangalore – India from the November 15th – 18th 2014.

    With the theme “Changing lives, changing societies, changing status of women” this event was aimed at exchanging ideas and recent changes in Law, between Jurists, Women Lawyers and students interested in Evolution of Law & Positive changes in the society through reports, Survey, Case studies, study of comparative law between the countries, Court Judgments and Documentary Films. We endeavour to cover all ideally interdisciplinary application.

    Presentations of the fundamental aspects of “Change In Laws And Role Of Women Lawyers” were particularly sought. About 750 Women Lawyers from all parts of the world attended, an occasion to meet and interact with Women Lawyers from different countries.

    The events consisted on six seminars with dignitaries, jurists and experts. As well as nonstop activities for four days including, visit to Courts, University Campus, NGO centers, Sightseeing, Shopping and Dinner.

    FIDA European Regional Conference 2013

    With the theme “Gender Equality & International Protection of Human Rights: A Myth or Reality”, this Regional Conference focused on progress, new challenges and a way forward to empowerment of women, girls and family in today’s world.

    Learning Objectives:

    • Speakers provided incisive information and an up to date analysis of the global challenges facing lawmakers and society in the pursuit of protecting the human Rights of Women & Family Globally.
    • Sessions were designed to provide insight into the solutions and suggestions key speakers have witnessed or participated directly in their work at the forefront of women issues.
    • In each debate, a global assessment and overview were made to encourage the flow of knowledge and strategies between delegates.

    The 2nd Fida Europe Regional Conference focused on the theme of gender equality and the international protection of human rights: A myth or a reality – Focus on progress, new challenges and a path towards the empowerment of women, the girls and family in today’s world.

    The speakers provided incisive information and an updated analysis of the global challenges facing legislators and society in the search for the protection of the human rights of women and the family throughout the world.
